Hygrophorus turundus var. sphagnophilus (Pk.) Smith & Hesler Cap 1-3.5cm across, broadly convex or flattened becoming broadly or deeply depressed with a decurved then wavy margin that sometimes spreads in age; red to scarlet, fading to yellow or brownish orange; dry, but minutely and densely woolly on the disc, becoming scaly. Gills adnate and sometimes becoming deeply decurrent, distant, broad or medium broad; red or orange or whitish to faintly yellow. Stem 40-120x 1-3mm, stuffed solid or becoming tubular, wavy; bright red or yellowish, whitish toward the bottom where buried in moss; smooth, silky, fragile. Flesh thin or thickish, soft; same color as cap. Odor mild. Taste mild. Spores subellipsoid to subreniform (kidney-shaped), smooth, 10-14 x 5-9µ Deposit white. Habitat scattered or in groups in sphagnum bogs. Found throughout northern and eastern North America. Season June-October. Edibility not known |
